Your description makes no sense. Pressing a mask onto her face? If he was trying to put her to sleep with gas, the mask has to fit tightly over both nose and mouth. Breath-holding is common during mask inductions. Ten years old and uncooperative is a nightmare from the anesthesiologist's point of view.
That is why patients over about 7 years of age ought to get an IV and not a mask induction. It's also why parents who have no idea what's going on should not be allowed into operating rooms.
If I were in that situation, I'd have stuck her with a syringe full of ketamine (after asking her nicely to cooperate). That take the fight out of them in about 30 seconds.
I'm betting that the anesthesiologist did the best he could in a difficult situation (and with an audience). He probably deserves a thank you instead of criticism.
I'm an anesthesiologist.
