As you probably know, I am a very poor speller and writer, but I am a dental office manager for http://www.drtheobald.net/ I have started answering questions so that I can become better at communicating with people that have dental questions and needs. The first question that needs to be answered about for future career as a chair side dental assistant is " how good are you with your hands" for me assisting is just not possible because I never developed much hand eye coordination, in fact I can hardly write by hand with a pen anymore. The other issue that I had to over come was fainting at the site of blood and other gross thing you might find in someone's mouth. Are you good with people, willing to learn, can you show up on time (5 min early) every day no matter what your personal life might throw at you? I have had to fired good chair-side assistants because they missed to many days, or came in crying every time they got in a fight with her boyfriend. Another way to get your foot in the door is to find a doctor that is wiling to train you on the job. Our office has done that a few times and some have gone on to become very valuable employees. In this economy it does not make sense to spend 10k to 15k to get a job that pays 15 to 20 per hour because most dental office only work 30 to 35 hours per week unless you work a corporate clinic. Some corporate dental offices also offer training but they often train the wrong way to do things, but after a few years and you really like what you are doing, you could always move to a better office. The final thing you should consider is that most dentist are odd people with weird personal habits and quirks. Most dentist are ok to see twice a year but 30 hours a week can be hard. The best way to see if the dental office is good to work at is to watch to see how much they laugh and how many patients drop off cookies, cakes, and pies! We get at least one per week!

No, there isn't alot of math needed in a dental assisting career. As a dental assistant you will need to have a GREAT memory. You will need to memorize things for setup, procedures with the DDS, taking x-rays (position of the x-ray), etc, etc... Just google a dental assisting program. Thats what I did. I am now a DA. I hope this helps.
