I just posted an answer to this very question on my blog the other day!. Everyone with natural teeth should be using SOFT bristles!. The only thing medium and hard toothbrushes are good for are cleaning dentures or the grout in your bathroom!. *grin*
You don't need a lot of force to clean the soft, sticky plaque off your teeth, but you do need to be thorough and make sure that you are cleaning all areas of your teeth especially at the gumline where plaque tends to build up!. Your gums are very delicate and using anything harder than soft bristles will cause recession!. For more info see my blog post!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can say for certain that a soft toothbrush is better!. You don't need to scrub your teeth to remove bacteria!. I've never had a dentist tell me to "scrub as hard as I can with the hardest toothbrush you can find"!. That wears away enamel and makes your gums recede!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Ultrasoft if you brush often (every meal) because the plaque is spare and not attached to your teeth that much, plus it won't damage your gums!.
If you only brush once a day or less, use a medium (for opposite reasons)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i would go with soft!. if you use a hard tooth brush it will shred your gums!. some soft brushes are to soft and work like a rotten egg!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
