Is a libial frenectomy necessary when there is no gap in the front teeth of a 16!

Question:

Is a libial frenectomy necessary when there is no gap in the front teeth of a 16 yr old?

My dentist just recommended it for my daughter. Her teeth are straight, with no gaps. The frenum connects just above her gum line.

Answers:

Depends, if it is really pulling hard on your gums it could cause recession of the facial gingiva over the teeth in that area. So it may still need to be done. Recession exposes root surfaces that have no enamel causing sensitivity and it is easier to get cavities on root surfaces b/c there is no enamel and that area is very difficult to fill if needed.
