Answers:

swollen gums can be due to gingivitis(gum infammation) or possibly an infection inside the tooth which is casing an absess to slowly form.
However, if you are not getting pain, then it is likely to be a gum infection.

As you said it is on your upper jaw, I have to ask....Do you smoke?

Tobacco smoke is drawn into the roof when drawing in on the cigarrette. Unfortunately, the nicotine and other toxins in the smoke reduces the blood flow the gums and this can lead to gum disease. Gum disease is often a painless condition, but is characterised by swollen, tender gums that sometimes bleed. (but in smokers, there can be very little bleeding due to the tobacco smokes reducing the blood flow to the area. It can be slowly gathering momentum in the mouth, but the tobacco smoke disguises the probelm)

In more advanced cases of gum disease, it can also be accompanied by halitosis(bad breath) and teeth that can slowly loosen and start to move.

It is very important that you see your dentist as soon as possible to have this problem investigated. You may need to have an x-ray taken of the area to determine if there is an infection inside the tooth and if there is you may need antibiotics and further treatment. You may need to see a dental hygienist/therapist for help with treatment of gingivitis and advice to help you with your specific problem.

Meanwhile, at home, what you can do is:
1. Brush x 2 per day with a medium texture toothbrush. An electric toothbrush with a samll round head is best. Do not avoid brushing the area as this will allow more bacteria to collect there. If you get any bleeding- go back and brush the area again- gently- as you need to remove the bacteria causing the problem.
2. floss x 2 per day or consider using inter detal brushes dipped in mouthwash (they look like small pipe cleaners and are available from pharmacy) x 2 per day
3. use a mouthwash containing hydrogen peroxide or chlorohexidene.(available from pharmacy) use after brushing and hold in mouth as long as possible. spit out excess but do not rinse out- leave rest there to continue working.

If you do all this at home, you should notice a difference in 48 hours. If not, please see your dentisit

good luck (dental hygienist)
