It will take some time...and i can guarentee you on that. But take a peice of plastic and cover it around your kid's thumb. Make sure the plasctic isnt smooth though, make it rough. That way it feels wierd when they suck it and it HELP them stop. If that doesnt work...warn them that they could go to the hospital for it, they could get sick, they'll need to take a shot if they dont stop, monsters love it....so they'll eat them. There are endless possibilities. Put a flavor they dislike on their finger. they will stop real quick because it wont be worth it to them anymore. try some lemon or lime juice, tabasco (small amount!), or something else that is bitter or undesirable
