Old and new braces?!

Question: what are the "new braces" and what's the "old braces"? what is the big difference? I just got braces put on Friday, and I don't know what "type" of braces they are, I'm sure they're the new ones. But is there any other type of braces? If so, what are the other types? and what is the reason for so many?

thanks! this has been bothering me. any answers are appreciated! :)

The old style of braces was a band around each and every tooth. They resembled train tracks on the teeth. Then came brackets that sat on the tooth surface. First they were metal, then came along ceramics which aren't as noticeable. Then came a thing called Damon brackets invented by Dr. Damon. They are a metal bracket with a door-like apparatus that closes over the archwire after it's placed. It takes the place of needing ligatures or elastomeric ties to hold the archwire in the bracket slot. All of the styles of brackets get the same results. The newer technologies are more comfortable and reduce chair-time. The reason for so many types is because like anything else, people try to improve a product to keep it cutting edge. Some people like the changes, while others prefer to stay with what they know and are comfortable working with.

Hope this helps! Good luck to you! :o)

Well if you got them on friday they must be "new"? you dont wear "old" braces.

Call your ortho - they'll be able to trim the wire. As for the wax, try making a ball and pushing it on the end - wrapping doesn't always work especially if you play with it with your tounge.

The "old" braces are those traditional ones with colored bands. You can get any colors, which is the good part. But the bad part is they take longer to straighten your teeth.

The new braces are the kinds with no colored bands, so you can't pick and colors, which is the bad part. The good part is that they straighten your teeth out more comfortably and faster.

There's also ceramic brackets... they blend in with teeth only if your teeth are white. That's the good thing about them... but they do stain easily and are more fragile then metal brackets.

Don't cut that wire unless you know what you're doing, I recommend getting a small piece of gauze and just put it over the wire.
