Sensitive tooth that was recently filled...?!

Question:

Sensitive tooth that was recently filled...?

I went to the dentist about a month ago and they filled in my tooth because I had a cavity. It's one of the front-back ones on the bottem on the left side. Anyway...The hole she drilled is sorta deeper than I thought it would be. And now my tooth is so sensitive. I can chew up anything hard, like the skin on chicken, or chips. Even if i poke it the slightest bit with a toothpick it hurts. It's also extremely sensitive to cold and heat. Will this ever go away....is it just a temporary thing?

I do see a little brown line right at the edge of the tooth....I didn't know if that was the cavitiy or a stain.

Answers:

Usually over time the sensitivity decreases. Ask yourself if the pain has increased, stayed the same or decreased since you had the tooth filled. For some individuals it can take up to a few months. Try Sensodyne/Crest sensitive toothpaste and/or a fluoride rinse. I would try placing some of the paste to the tooth with your finger and let it sit there for a while. (repeat a couple times a day for a few days) If that doesn't help I would have it re-evaluated by the dentist. If the cavity was deep - you are getting very close to the nerve. If worse comes to worse you may need a root canal. It would be better than being in constant pain or even avoid eating on the left side. Feel better.
