Will wearing rubber bands on my braces actually help with a severe overbite?!

Question: My orthodontist strongly urged me to have corrective jaw surgery to fix my overbite. Ive done the reaearch on the surgery and consulted with both my dental and health insurance and they both say they wont cover any of the costs. The surgery Im told costs upwards of 20,000. I cant afford to have the surgery. Now, at one year into my braces, Im wearing bands, faithfully, 23 plus hours a day. But I wonder if its going to help since he pretty much told me he doesnt see the point in even keeping my braces on any longer because they're not really doing any more good. Will I see any improvement at all by wearing the bands?

Please wear the bands! Continue to take care of your lovely new teeth when you have the braces off too as I have to admit, your teeth have a great "memory" and failure to wear the retainer afterwards [if told to] will cause your teeth to shift around again, as mine have! After alllll of the discomfort of tightening and correcting the braces, thats the last thing you want!

Also.. continue to do as your orthodontist says. They are the experts and wearing my bands seemed to make things move along more quickly, and I saw an improvement to my over-bite quite soon after I became regular with them.

Good luck and look forward to having perfect teeth! The first thing many people look at when you speak, is your pearly whites!

yes

They will only cover the surgery if you have TMJ with bad symptoms, like chronic pain or problems with eating. Bands will help line up the teeth to a degree, they don't do much if you have problems with jaw allignment.

Yes it will, I'm living proof. I could stick 2 fingers between my upper and lower teeth before I had rubber bands.

yes because they will pull your teeth back into your gums and re-alighn your jaw. you should change rubber bands every month or two to a stronger rubber so they pull tighter and tighter.

yes. it will just take a long time.

Why argue with the professionals? You should have the surgery. But the rubber bands will help to correct it slightly because they place a constant stress on the upper jaw to bring it further back. But obviously in your case, this is not enough. I would go ahead with the surgery. Just save up and keep the bands there for a few more years. :)

I had quite a severe overbite and my braces had a bar across the roof of my mouth which widened my bite and then I had the bands too which pulled everything back, I also had to wear the dreaded head brace for a while! but just a night time..so I didnt need the surgery, it was never even suggested, and my teeth turned out fine so I don't see why he thinks surgery is the only option..

Yes I really does. I saw my dentist a few years ago and he told me I had to have surgery on my jaw to correct my bite. It worried me a lot. I hated the thought of having surgery. At the time I was wearing braces and my orthodontist told me he could correct them using rubber bands. I had to wear them from my upper to lower jaw on both sides. It wasn't very nice wearing them but I got used to them after a while and it corrected the problem. So is it worth wearing them? Yes indeed.

yes it does!
they might be a pain in the ash
but they will pay off later on
jus b faithful about wearing them

yes it will

I had my braces put on over a year ago and it cost bundles of money, all i thought my orthodontist was gonna do was make my teeth straight but i had to wear the bands too and they do work. yes wear the bands that will improve them i promise!
