The temporary filling still binds to the tooth like most other fillings, it's just weaker so it grinds down quicker with eating, but still takes many months for even this to happen..

However, most root canals are needed on teeth that are becoming reasonably weak with decay, and quite often part of the tooth can break off after treatment because the tooth is most likely to be not much more than a shell, housing the filling. If this happens, it can, and is quite likely to, take the filling with it, depending on what you may have bitten on or done to cause the tooth to chip again.

You should be able to tell the difference between what is tooth and what is filling because the temporary filling they usually put in is of a slightly yellowish tint in comparison to the tooth color itself. If you can not see this yellowish filling in the tooth, or a hole seems to be apparent (no matter how small), then you should go back to the dentist immediately to get the tooth refilled, so that the antibiotics that they placed into the tooth can continue to work on the roots without interference by the bacteria in your mouth or exposure of the canals.

Good luck and I hope it is alright after all.

I have a feeling you would certainly know if the filling came out. I believe that it would be extremely painful and there would be a hole where the filling was!!!!!!

I'd imagine that if it came out you would know right away, wouldn't it be painful? Go to the store and buy a $3 dental mirror/pick from the toothbrush isle. If that isn't a option then just head on back into your dentist's office and ask them, it's a small step for a quick check up on a big dental procedure. I'd be more safe than sorry and save yourself some pain and / or infection...

You would know. It would hurt.
