I am terrified of the dentist.?!

Question:

I am terrified of the dentist.?

I really tried to make myself go, but I got sick and threw up in the office, and I left. I got a wisdom tooth pulled last time I went and haven't been back since. It was so painful that I am still tormented by it, it worse than having a baby. I got a dry socket, I think my mouth went into shock from the pain. I couldn't feel half my mouth for almost a year. Lots of bites on the tongue as a result. The bad thing that worries me is that the other 3 NEED to be pulled. I only got that 1 pulled that day because my mouth was swollen. I don't know how I am going to go to the dentist with this fear. Will they write me a prescription for something to calm me before I go? I really need to go.

Answers:

Discuss how you are feeling with your dentist, he or she should always be willing to listen to your concerns and will understand where you are coming from. As a dentist myself I have seen many patients with a fear of dental exams/procedures. There are medications that can be prescribed to help you relax, but a simple talk with your dentist may be all you need to help get rid of your fear. Don't worry, your dentist is there to help you, not hurt you in any way. Good luck!
