Worried about retainers?!

Worried about retainers?

Hi i have recently learned that that after i get my braces off i will have to wear retainers during the day for about a year, im a bit worried do they make you talk wierd and also do i really have to have them for the rest of my life at night?

Also if they do make me talk wierd how wierd, what sounds will i not be able to say properly. can i overcome a speech problem over time?

Honestly, I only wore mine during the day for a month or two and my teeth are fine.

Its not that bad wearing it during the day though. Some words that start with an S are kind of hard to say but its not very noticable. It seems worse to you because you are worried others will hear it. My friends didn't even notice it until I pointed it out. The biggest thing is make sure you don't accidentally throw it away when you take it out to eat! You do not want to dig through the garbage to find it.

I got my braces off 4 years ago and I still wear my retainer at night most of the time. However, everyone I know stopped wearing theirs a long time ago. The only reason I wear mine is because it stops me from grinding my teeth at night. Its not necessary to wear it your entire life.

They also glue a retainer behind your front bottom teeth. It doesn't make you talk funny and you can't see it, but food gets stuck in it really bad.
