Sinus and facial problems from TMJ?!

Question:

Sinus and facial problems from TMJ?

A year ago I had 2 cat scans done on sinuses and head, 1 cat scan on neck and 1 xray on neck. sinuses were the only bad thing. On my right side of face i get symtpoms. Muscle spasms above ear, eye feels twitchy once in a while, tight feeling on right side of face. My right ear feels clogged sometimes, my jaw crackles at times and feels tight. I found a small lump under my ear lobe on my jaw line. Doctor told me a couple weeks ago it is nothing to worry about to leave it be. I have had my family doc tell me she has no clue and i will wake up one day and all the symptoms will go away. The feeling is fine when i first wake up in the morning but when i start my daily routine it gets worse or if i massage that bump. A pulled legament tmj or muslce/nerve damage from tmj? I wore a mouth guard (dentist orders) to help but it made it worse, it made me clench more. I rarely clench now, but i did a year ago from crying and grieving. I do feel somewhat better now than i did a year ago. Any ideas?

I should also add that when i open my mouth sometimes if feel little cruch clicking on my right side below my ear around where the ear and jaw are. I can not totally pinpoint it though.
If i leave it be i am ok, but when i start moving my jaw and pushing behind my ear trying to give some relief, i find it gets worse.
If i leave it be i am ok. Sometimes the funny feeling goes up the right side of my head. I try to leave it all be as much as i can, letting that side relax so i feel somewhat relieved.. muscle or nerve maybe?

Answers:

Facial pain from non-dental origin has been a very confusing area for dentist for years. This is an area where knowledge from just one specialty of dentistry is not enough. Comprehensive care for patients suffering chronic facial and neck pain comes from colloborative efforts from various dental specialties like prosthodontics, endodontics, oral medicine and oral radiology, and oral & maxillofacial surgery. There are very few hosptials which devote departments only for facial pain and TMJ disorders eg. Parker E. Mahan Facial Pain Center in Florida, The Craniofacial Pain Center of Tufts University(MA), Center for Oral, Facial and Head Pain at Columbia University (NY) etc.

If you think that you have exhausted all your resources and still have problems in your jaw you should try your local dental school and hospital to check if it has any facial pain departments. Also check online for Facial pain centers. These are the doctors who take multidisciplinary approach to solve facial pain.

Good Luck !
