I am having ridiculously strong pain... should I go to the ER? Anyone know what !

Question: Okay...
So, about 5 years ago I had my second to last molar removed due to it being chipped and causing pain.
About 3 days ago I started having intense pain in the spot where the missing tooth was.
My gum in that exact area is swollen terribly.
I took a mirror and looked at the area... the place where I had the tooth removed is not closed, at least not all the way.
Does anyone know if this is serious or not?
Maybe I just got food stuck and it is irritated?
I have no insurance so I'm trying to hold off going to the E.R. but I could really use some expert opinions here.
Its KILLING me though. Will it pass? Should I go to the ER?
Anyone?
HELP!

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 20 years. If the pain is that strong go to ER. You may have a serious infection. However, in the mean time, rinse with very salty warm water and hold it on the area. it is possible that an over retained root tip has finally managed to work it's way out and the area is infected from food entrapment. Try brushing gently and rinsing to see if you get any relief. You may have to do this 2-4 times, and if you see no change, go to ER as you will probably need antibiotics as well and a thorough cleaning of the area. Good luck. ~M

try antibiotics for 7 days and make an x-ray ,if there is a whole there you need a curretage.

If it is throbbing, you have an infection. Best to go to the ER and get it taken care of.

I'll have to agree and disagree with Marie. The ER can not get rid of the problem. They can only give you meds to cover it up. Get to your dentist ASAP for x-rays to determine if a root tip was inadvertently left in. As for payments, most dentist will send a bill for emergency treatments. In the mean time, take some ibuprofen (Advil, Aleve, etc). You can actually double up on the dose...this is the same as prescription strength. Hope this helps, and good luck!
