1. There is nothing you can do to make sure you are ready other than do exactly as your orthodontist directs you to do. If he asks you to wear elastic bands, wear elastaic bands. If he tells you to brush your teeth more so your gums won't suffer, then do so. PS. the best thing you can do for yourself when you have braces is brush and floss often...it keeps your gums healthy.

2. It will feel rather slimey when you get them off, but that feeling will go away. :)

3. I wouldn't say it's likely that you will have cavities, providing you have been going in for regular check ups with your general dentist and you have been brushing and flossing as much as possible.

4. A retainer is actually an oral appliance which is made specifically for your mouth/teeth to keep your teeth in line. It helps maintain the "straight" alignment. If they ask you to wear it at night...do so. Expect to hear to wear it for the rest of your life.

5. Crest strips work wonders. There are other ways to whiten your smile, too. Speak to your regular dentist about it to see if they can recommend something for you. :)

Congratulations!!! :)
