Is a Porcelain crown with noble metal really required after a root canal?!

Question: I'm about to have a root canal on a lower molar. The doctor recommends that i get a porcelain crown with noble metal, which costs me another 600$. Is this really required? are there any other alternatives?

When you get a root canal your tooth is significantly weakened. The crown will basically hold your tooth together and protect it. Since root canals on molar teeth take away so much structure and molars have a lot of force put on them daily its a very good idea to get a crown. You can get away with a small filling on a front tooth since less structure is taken away and there is less force put on front teeth, but people who refuse crowns for molars with endodontic treatment and go with a filling instead tend to quickly regret it when their tooth they spent all that money saving cracks and has to get pulled. The best alternative to root canal and crown is pull the tooth and have an implant placed, but that is more costly. So if you look at it that way, you're saving money :) Good luck!

yes unless you want bleeding gums.

About the only alternative is to have the tooth pulled.

Probably wants to stabilize the tooth.

You can always have your tooth pulled, easier and cheaper. When you get the crown there is always a chance that the tooth can still become infected. It happened to me.

It's a rip off....I just would have had em pull the tooth really. Dentists are the biggest, the BIGGEST rip offs in the world. They have no one watching over them either to make sure they are being honest and fair.....I don't trust them...good luck.

It is only necessary so the guy can get another porche.

A root canal is having the tooth pulled from the root for what I know, so why would you have to have other stuff if the tooth is gone? The dentist may just want extra money.
tell him to pull the tooth and if you have any problems you'll come back to get it done.

YES, THIS IS NEEDED BECAUSE AFTER THE ROOT CANAL THE TOOTH BECOMES DRIED OUT AND IS SUBJECT TO CRACKING.
THE GUMS WON'T BLEED IF YOU DON'T GET THE CROWN. BUT YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
A ROOT CANAL W/O A CROWN IS A TICKING TIME BOMB.
IT WOULD BE A SHAME TO HAVE THIS TOOTH EXTRACTED AFTER ALL THE TIME AND MONEY SPENT IF YOU FRACTURED IT. ;-(
