What exactly is a root canal, and why is it done?!

Question: I am getting one on Thursday and have no idea what to expect.

A root canal is the process of removing the pulp tissue of the tooth. The pulp will need removed if decay goes to the nerve or if the nerve is infected or dying. They use a drill then a series of files to remove all of the nerve and make the canals smooth so that they can fill them with a rubber-like material called gutta percha. After a root canal, the tooth becomes very brittle and will require a crown to be placed. You will also need a build-up which fills in the tooth that was removed to access the nerve. Usually there is not much pain/discomfort associated with the actual root canal or the healing process, although, you may require a round of antibiotics if there is a lingering infection of the tooth.

first they will make you really numb and then they drill in and get all of your nerves out and then they cap it off.

A root canal is the removal of the nerve of the tooth which rest "inside canals" in the tooth. They can be reached by drilling an access opening through the top of the tooth and then they are removed and the canals are opened or enlarged then cleaned and filled with a gutta percha material which is cemented into place. The opening is sealed with a composite filling material or build up, which replaces any missing tooth structure. You will then need to have a crown placed on the tooth to give the tooth added support and keep it from possible fracture at a later date.

root canal procedure is used as a last resort attempt to save a tooth.basically the nerve will have died inside the tooth and root canal work involves drilling a small hole into the tooth and gentle cleaning or reaming out of the dead nerve. once this has been achieved, the empty tooth is filled with fine plastic inserts and sealed.its usually a very successful procedure and especially worth doing if its on a front tooth.hopefully ,it will negate the need for extraction of the tooth(thus preventing further expensive bridge work).don't be worried about this,i must have seen hundreds done and its definitely no worse than a simple filling!!hope this helps and i hope it works for you xx

You'll be fine. Had re-treatments for mine Saturday and Sunday. I ALWAYS get them so don't worry.
