Wisdom tooth question?!

Question:

Wisdom tooth question?

I had one of my upper widom teeth removed, and i didn't have any pain at all, but i have had swelling on my cheek, and it is has been 4 days. It has gone down some, but how long before it completely goes away? Are there any other remedies besides applying ice and moist heat? I don't see how heat will help much. I am 2 ibuprofen, but that doesn't do anything. Would anitbiotics or a steroid injection help? Because i have to go back and have the other ones removed and don't like my cheek being swollen for days.

Thanks for all the answers. They were helpful. Well actually I am going to a oral surgeon, and he wanted to removed all of them at once, but since i had 5 to remove, i didn't want to have them all done at once, because i really can't afford to be out of work for too long. And having the one done only took like 15 min and i had no pain, and no sedative. I am just bothered by the swelling. I was only taking 2 ibuprofen that are 200 mg. So thats probably why it wasn't helping much.

one more question. Is it really ok to take that much ibuprofen? I don't want to take too much. So its okay to take 800 mg?

Answers:

Ice makes the swelling go down by cooling it. heat increases the blood flow to aid in healing. A mixture of both works well. You can take 800mg of Motrin every 4 hours for a few days, it won't hurt you unless you have kidney problems. Motrin will also help with the swelling. Usually it will take a week for the swelling to go away. If you start to experience more pain you need to contact your doctor. Antibiotics will only help if you have an infection. An infection will cause increased pain, more swelling, more redness and possible discharge. The steroids won't help. Good luck.
