Alright. Let me just say that I myself am on a diet and have lost 5kg in 2 months because if it, so I know it works.
Now it's not really a diet, bt a set of rules you should follow. The rules are:
No artificial sugar ( no candy no chocolate...)
DrInk water before and during meals as well as when you wake up.
Avoid eating a lot of carbs so limit bread and pasta
Do not eat anything after 6pm ( your body starts slowing down so it will just turn into fat)
Eat fruits that are full of water (orangers, cucumbers)
Keep a food diary and track the amount of calories you intake.
Only eat lean meat.
No bananas.
When you are hungry, drink water
Avoid coffee.
Apples are a good snack. Eat them
These are just some basic guidelines to loss weigt IN A HEALTHY WAY and for a long time.

Any diet plan that cuts down on number of total calories per day = effective because you will lose weight (assuming thats your goal since it seems to be 99% of Yahoo answer people)
Any diet is shown in a large scientific study to be effective as long as you STICK WITH IT!

It is Canada;s food guide, use that and deduct 20% off your usual daily caloric intake
(i.e lets say you consume 2000, now you'll cut down to 1600)
- 400 calories per day will cause you just to lose 1 lb per week, that 1 lb you putt is likely to stay off forever because you dieted the right way.
Your body does not like change, this is why it is a slow process, but once the deed is done, the results are forever to stay.

Try eating more meals but at the same time smaller meals. If you are eating 3-4 meals as of right now, try eating 6 small meals. This is a healthy way to control weight gain. You will want to eat the right foods too.
Try eating only fruit and vegetables for 4 of those 6 meals. The other 2 meals, you want to have some type of meat in a small portion and some type of starch in the other. Keep these meals to the smallest portions as possible.
Try exercising with this method. Maybe jog or run for 5-10 minuets at night or in the morning. Do some push ups and sit ups. This should really help keep weight off and at the same time lose weight fast.
