Will a healthy diet reverse damage that I may have done to myself?!

Question: Will a healthy diet reverse damage that I may have done to myself?
I am 34 years old now, and over the last 18 months I've been making my diet more healthy. Specifically, I eat very little meat and when I do it's chicken and very occasionally pork. Mostly, I eat brown rice, brown pasta, vegetables, fruit, nuts, beans, pulses, etc. I also regularly eat fish and occasionally shellfish.

Since eating this way, I have found that my energy levels are much improved, I've lost weight and I look healthier.

Also, the more I look into eating meat, it seems that in the West we gorge ourselves on meat and it's not good for us - many people eat far too much meat to be healthy.

The trouble is that when I was younger, I didn't care about living a "healthy" lifestyle, I drank, smoked, ate crap and stayed up all night. Now, I haven't smoked for 10 years, and I haven't drunk for 11. but the crap eating continued up until last year.

The question is, by eating a healthy diet now and taking regular exercise and generally being kind to myself, can my body fully repair the damage that I've probably done to it by eating junk food? E.g., if arteries have started to harden, is this reversible? I.e. will they "unharden" by eating a lot of good food, including olive oil, for example?

Kudos for you for being able to take initiative like this. I really doubt your arteries have hardened already at age 34. I do believe that good fats help combat bad ones in the blood. You are an inspiration to me. :)

The stopping smoking for 10 years will have reversed most or all of the damage
The stopping drinking for 11 years will have reversed all of the damage
and by eating healthy now, your begining to reverse the damage of the crap eating.
so in say 3-4 years of eating healthy, you will definatly of reversed the damage by then of crap eating.

Yes - the body will always heal damage done to it naturally, its just that usually people damage it faster than it heals.

JJ-
Good for you.
I did the same thing but I am 51 now.
I do cardio training for an hour every day. But I train. I'm the guy you see with sweat pouring down.
Last year I ran a 17 mile mountain foot race.
If you had told me I was going to do that 3 years ago I would have said you were cray.
We cannot reverse some damage but our bodies can repair a lot of it. Our lungs can and do clear out the tar and other debris from smoking but the scarring that occurs in the lungs is not repaired.
We do regenerate some new tissue to offset the scar tissue. The body does an great job of cleansing and detoxing oitself just with a healthy, high fiber diet.
Our arteries do not "harden" but do clog up with cholesterol based plaque.
Search foods, high in fiber, foods that lower blood pressure, and foods that lower cholesterol and you are golden.
Try attending a health fair in your area and getting some blood pressure, cholesterol, and other available tests to make sure everything is okay.
Sounds like you are on the program and should live a long and healthy life if you stick with it.

I am researching the value of milk thistle extract. Apparently it has a chemical in it that is not available in any other plant. Supposed to help the liver a lot. Search milk thistle in Dr. Oz videos for information. I am not a big supplement fan but this one might be worth it.
Luck.
