When ever you go into a calorie deficit (burn more than you consume), you lose weight.

We have two sources of energy that our body can rely on to sustain us, adipose tissue (fat) and lean tissue (muscle).

Our body will primarily use adipose tissue for fuel in the absence of glycogen (food). The exception is the brain. Adipose tissue can not cross the blood brain barrier and protein is the energy source for the brain. With that being said. you lose both at the same time in a calorie deficit with 80% being fat and 20% muscle.

I believe technically your body will burn fat before muscle for energy. However, there is a reason starvation diets are not healthy. Your body needs more than just calories to function. You need to eat so that you have vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc.

Severely reducing the amount of food you eat will actually work against you and trick your body into thinking it needs to store (as fat)more of the energy you consume since it's in such short supply.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn passively, so hit the gym.

And if you're interested in weight loss and not just the answer to that specific question, check out www.crossfit.com and spend some time on their forums, especially the "testimonial" section. It's an awesome program.

Well, firstly, don't starve yourself. If you do you'll just gain more weight. If you dont have breakfast your body goes "Hey I'm hungry and I'm gonna turn all the stuff I eat today into fat."
It would be better just to eat healthier, eg. not too many sweet and fatty foods, just eat more fruit and veg and dont add unnessicary sugar/fat/salt to food that u dont need.
To lose weight you burn fat, but to do that you have to do some form of physical excercise that raises you heart rate. After that when there is only muscle, that strengthens, doesn't burn.

If you wanna be fit, eat better, do lots of excercise, and continue with that so you dont gain it all back.

Also, if you eat only water, your body will eventually go "I'm STARVING i NEED TO EAT" and it will siphon off fat and the muscle but thats REALLY unhealthy and I don't reccomend it. Not eating leads to loss of concentration, lower physical and mental ability, mood swings, unhealthy skin/hair, loss of sleep, fainting and overtiredness.

Follow my three step thing if you want to lose weight cos it's the healthy way. Most effective excercise for losing weight is going for 30 min jogs at a good pace, and NOT stopping, or going for walks everyday.

Hope this helps :)

EXPERIENCE MAN! have lost 5 kgs doing that ^^

you have to feed your body with sufficient nutrients so to convince it that it does not need to hang on to your fat reserves so instead of tiny meals of whatever - just eat mainly ALL protein one's BUT take in some really good food at the same time eg green veg, this will raise your metabolic rate and fat weight will drop off extremely fast ,the worst thing anyone can do is starve themselves to lose fat as muscle comes off at the same time - amino acids would be used for energy instead of your objective and that is your storage fat..

The general wisdom has been to build muscle first because it assists the fat buring process.
