You should be exercising, not because you want flat abs, but for your own personal health. Running, walking, and swimming are great methods to tone the entire body, especially the heart. You will also get a better workout if you run on the street or on a trail rather than a tread mill.
If you are going to weight lift in a gym, you should have an equal amount of days in the gym as you have out. I would suggest going every other day to the gym. Perhaps the weekend off if you like.
