A food diary is something you can keep regardless of any particular diet!. There are websites that will help you with this, or you can just keep a plain diary at home!.
You should avoid "dieting," and instead think in terms of lifestyle changes that you can maintain forever!. If your diet is not one that you can see yourself maintaining forever, then you shouldn't do it at all!. The best diet is simply to eat healthy foods: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats/dairy!. You won't need to keep track of calories as much if you eat this way because it'll all be nutritious, and these foods are difficult to eat too much of!. If you're keeping a food diary, though, you'll be better at self-discipline when it comes to portion size and junk food!.
