starvation mode (when you eat less than 50% of your calorie need per day) simply means that your metabolism will slow down!. You will lose weight but not as quickly as you did to begin with!.
However it is not advisable because you can become ill and put on the weight quickly again afterwards if you do not come off of the diet slowly!. For a while you body will hold onto food it has stored and goes into starvation mode!. Then anything you eat after that your body will 'keep' because it thinks that food will rarely be eaten!.
