Question:

I think I have an eating disorder. I am 5'8 and I weigh 105 pounds. HELP!?

It isn't intentional. I have just gotten out of a break up the food just wont go down, I have started smoking as well. I have been going out more and clubbing for about 6 hours - 5-6times a week. And now I am worried as I can't get to sleep and my spinal cord is showing. I can count about 5 ribs. I dont want to be like this. I know it isnt healthy, I can't help it. Everytime I try to eat, I just end up crying.

HOW can I help myself to start eating again?
And what weight should I target myself at? 115/120lbs?

Answers:

You are really underweight. If you have a medium sized frame (like most people), for your height your ideal weight is 140 pounds plus or minus 10 pounds. So, your weight should be between 130 and 150 to be at a healthy weight.

I don't think you have an eating disorder. I think maybe you're just depressed over your breakup. I think so because anorexics don't think they're doing anything wrong to themselves and bulimics know there's something wrong with what they're doing but they feel so guilty about it and won't admit it. They're very secretive about it and if you're admitting to what you're doing on here, I doubt you have a disorder. People who are depressed, sometimes don't eat.

You obviously know that you're underweight, which is another sign you don't have a disorder because anorexics and bulimics think they're overweight.

I suggest you see a psychologist or just talk to someone you're comfortable with to help you get over your break up. See how they can help you mentally, so you won't cry when you eat. If that doesn't help, then go to a dietician. Also, try to slowly train yourself to eat a little at a time and gradually build up. To gain weight, eat calorie dense foods. Fat is high in calories but try to stick to unsaturated fats because trans fat and saturated fats are unhealthy. An easy way to add calories to your diet is to just cook with oil (such as canola or vegetable). Have a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast. The natural peanut butter is better than the usual Jiffy/Skippy everyone is used to because natural peanut butter is a source of unsaturated fat, whereas jiffy/skippy contains partially hydrogenated oil (saturated fat).

What's your favorite food? It can't be all that hard to get yourself to eat if it's something you really enjoy. If you have any other questions, email me.

Edit- I just read the answers above me and Andrew is correct on calculating your ideal weight. That's the exact calculation I use for people but like I said, that calculation is used for medium frames.
