Mass and Definition: Can you have one with the other?!

Question: So I'm kinda stuck.

I'm a relatively lean guy, and for the past couple of months, have been working out. I definitely see progress in my shoulders, and, overall. I would like my biceps to be bigger, but they're kinda small, and I feel that no matter what I do, they'll stay that way.

I have been using creatine for a while, and it has helped.

Just recently, however, I was wondering if you could develop mass AND get toned/defiition at the same time. Some sources say no (in order to get mass you need to do less reps of heavier weights, and in order to get definition you need to do more reps with less heavier weights).

But I was wondering, can one do both? I mean, if you look at those magazines with those guys in it (like Men's Fitness and such), they seem to have BOTH size AND definition?

What is their secret????

Also, how long do I have to work out in order to look like that??? I really do need patience. Thanks!

you can definetly have both but it takes time. building big muscles is all about the diet, it's 80% of the equation. going to the gym and training heavy using progressive resistance is easy, consuming 5-7 meals every couple of hours for years on end is not. dedication to the diet is the only thing that separates the big guys in the gym from the wannabe big guys.

there needs to be a caloric excess in the diet with the right about of nutrients to cause growth of skeletal muscle. conversely to decrease body fat there has to be a caloric deficit. this is why "attempting" to do both at once will bring less than minimal results in either one.

also don't compare yourself to the male models and professional bodybuilders in fitness magazines 90% of them use anabolic and androgenic steroids. everyone can make drastic changes to their physique with the right diet and training at a high level of intensity but it takes time and dedication.

* personally it took me almost 10 years to go from 140 lbs to 240 lbs while staying in single digit body fat.

* I currently train and consult NPC and IFBB bodybuilders

Yes you can have mass and definition. All you do to get more definition is cardio.

If you have low body fat and mass, you'll look huge and defined.

It takes years of bodybuilding to get huge.

Yes, you can have both. But you need to be dedicated to a good training and nutrition program. I struggled with this for awhile as well. I am naturally very skinny, so I would bulk up and gain some muscle, but also a good amount of fat. Then I would diet to lose fat, only to lose most of the muscle I put on. I would highly recommend seeking out a professional in your area. Not a personal trainer though. Find a local strength coach or buy a book that puts you on the right path so that you stop wasting your time.

Here's a good site I found that really helped. It gave me great workouts and diet tips and showed me what I was doing wrong.
