Like j dizzel said. The important thing when doing ab work is to keep your lower back flat on the floor, and you can't do that if the surface under you is contorting and comforming to your shape. It will be far less effective than if you're on a hard surface.
on a flat hard surface. a bed is soft and it bends, making it easier to do an ab workout, and its much less efective.
