Is the BMI chart the best guide for weight lost?!

Question: I know that i'm a thick girl. i could lose some weight. But according to the BMI chart I am EXTREMELY obese. on this chart i have one green(normal weight range) block and i haven't weighed that much since i was in middle school/ early high school. My doctor said if i wieghed 50 pounds less i'd be at a good healthy weight. Yet that weight is borderline obese according to the chart. I have never had any real health problems. I've never been "skinny." But i have been at the healthy weight my doctor recommended. I don't even feel obese. no one around me except my mother really says i am so fat. I've gotten chubby. So can I really go off this chart as a guide?

BMI numbers have always seemed pretty light to me.
If you're muscular, then they are not accurate.

Insurance companies, doctors will use bmi's. For me personally, I think that getting into the middle range would be really hard.

I think though that sometimes a weight can be too low for a person to maintain and still be healthy. Not everybody, but my ex-wife was below 140, then she always was getting sick.
You will know if you need to lose weight or if you are fine.

Having your body fat measured is the best indicator of your weight. I think Mike's numbers are pretty aggressive. I think that the normal range is a bit higher than that. (But I could be wrong as it's been awhile and am basing my opinion on memory).
The most accurate measure comes from dunking a person in water. However this is too costly for most.

No. BMI does not take muscle mass, bone structure, etc into account.

Here's a handy chart I use that will help you figure out where you should be based on your frame size and height:

definitely not, BMI calculators only take into account a few major characteristics but EVERYONE is completely different and those calculators don't work at all. For my weight and height they say I am obese which I am very far from. Don't let the BMI get you down or make you lose 100 pounds-they're pure junk.

No, but it is a good guide for fat lose. An even better method is to have a trainer, or doctor, measure your bodyfat percentage. They put calipers at 3 different areas of your body....chest, abdomen, and thigh for men...and can tell you your percentage of bodyfat. A good range (normal) for men would be between 10% to 16%...but no higher. For a woman, its 15% to 22%. As long as your bodyfat is within these ranges, how much you weight doesn't matter, because that weight will be muscle mass. Hope that helps.

Well I do not know allot of the BMI chart, but my sister lost 20 lbs in 3 months with The Apple Patch. I could not believe it, than after 8 months of diets she could not lose more than 5 pounds and after 3 months with a natural patch could do it. I guess each person needs different ways to approach a diet.

Listen to your doctor. If you are large framed or carrying a higher amount of lean mass then BMI can class you as overweight or evne obese, when in reality your body fat % is perfectly healthy.

Try to find out your body fat % and go by that.

Good luck : )
