If youre new to weightlifting, make sure to start out light. Once you get used to lifting, start lifting heavier weights, try to lift weight that you can do 3 sets of 8-10 reps. When you get used to that, go heavier and do 6-8 reps. Also, eat a lot of protein but break it down into 6-7 small meals a day.

Also, be sure to put some rest days in there to give your muscles time to heal.
