Nuts about nuts (literally)...?!


Question: i heard on the radio yesterday that if you eat 2 oz. of nuts atleast 5x per week you will have added 3 years to your life. this is according to a research study. true or false? how do they know this? and whats so great about nuts thats so healthy for you?

Nuts are a good, non-animal source of protein. They have fibre. They are also full of fats of the healthy variety. So they are probably one of the best snacks around, in moderation.

I have heard that walnuts and almonds are particularly good. Look for organic, raw nuts.

Peanuts are legumes, not nuts, although they do share some of the qualities of nuts.

I don't know about the adding 3 years to your life, though. News outlets are pretty notorious for quoting research studies out of context. But studies have indicated that nuts might lower your risk of heart problems or developing type 2 diabetes.

I don't know about the "adding years" part. But nuts are *extremely* healthy for you.

People used to say avoid them because they are high in fat. It turns out that the fat is a very healthy kind that is good for your heart and cholesterol levels. There are also lots of antioxidants in them.

Just have small portions because they are high in calories.

There are a couple of reasons this could be true--first of all, nuts are one of the best sources for omega three fat, which is a crucial fat for a healthy functioning body. Second of all, many people who eat that many nuts each day are probably also eating a lot less of protein sources that contain unhealthy, saturated fats, like beef or cheese. I also suspect that nuts have some very good micro-nutrients that we may not even be aware of yet, but that we need for optimum health. There is no doubt that the human body developed with nuts as one of our primary food sources, so it would make sense that we would function very well including them in our diets.
