Runner who needs help building muscle!!!?!


Question: I am a long distance runner who is one of those skinny runners who has strong legs. But my arms are really weak (I have a problem doing 65 lbs bench press...) I know its hard for runners to build muscle (especially ones like me who have a VERY hard time doing so!) but is there any tips out there beside the standard eat a lot of protein? I do! I'm from the Mid-West!

start drinking protein shakes. if you go to your local GNC (or a lot of grocery stores have it too), its in a powder form and you just mix it with water or milk. and drink it before you go lift weights or whatever. it will build muscle up to six times faster than without it.

do 20 push ups every night before you go to bed. pull ups too. it will take a few months, but it can really pay off in the long run.

To gain weight you have to eat more calories than you burn. When adding calories, try to stay away from adding too much fat. While you can get fat from eating carbohydrates or protein, your body likes to use carbohydrates as fuel more than fat. To gain muscle, in addition to eating more you have to stimulate your muscles enough through resistance training that while they recover, they'll get bigger and stronger. To get an efficient workout you might want to join a gym if you aren't already a member.
