Do you think fat people should at least attempt to lose their excess baggage?!

Question: Most of them do not even see a problem.

Answers: Most of them do not even see a problem.

Yes, they are losing their health and comfort. I know that I should lose a few pounds, but I only have to buy one airplane seat and never have to worry about overloading an elevator.
I so sympathize with people who have medical problems or take medication that can cause weight gain, but being morbidly obese because of this isn't an excuse to overeat. People don't realize that obesity also causes serious medical issues: high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, gout, etc.
Many of my very sick patients have lost weight and in return have become relieved of their medical problems.

If they want to, I am currently attacking my weight problem.

So I get thumbs down for attacking my weight problem?

As long as their problem doesn't become my problem, there really is no problem... =)

Only if it makes them unhappy.

i suppose its their freedom, i don't think we should cover thier food or medical costs though.

As a fat person I do think that we should. Obesity is overtaking America and this is only going to drive up the cost of health care and insurance.

I think people should do whatever makes them happy. Its not the end of the world to have a little extra baggage.

no, but i think skinny people ought to put some meat on their bones!!

I think it would be in their best interest to lose weight. I know its hard but its worth it in the end to be healthy and happier.

I'm sure many of them attempt it but it's very difficult for people to do so...sometimes the process is so slow that they are working on it and they've been working on it for the past 2 months, but results are slow to appear.

Other times it is genetic (thyroid gland) and they can't do anything about it. Or it could be in medication they are taking. I'm sure some people do attempt to lose weight and there are lots who want to but don't get started on the first step which is to GET UP and DO IT. Others are so morbidly obese that they simply cannot get up, but that's when they bring in the doctors, trainers, etc. and they work out in their beds.

I attempt to lose my excess baggage, but every day I'm growing older, and it becomes harder. I eat about half of what I did when I was 18 (and only weighed 130 lbs.). I can't move as much, as I am now double that weight, but I still exercise.

My problems are:
1) I used to have a high metabolism as a kid, so I used to eat a lot and not gain any weight, but since I reached adulthood, it's slowed drastically.

2) I used to participate in high school athletics, and there aren't that many oppurtunities for adults (who suck) to play sports.

3) I had sleep apnea, even when I was skinny, so when I wake up, I feel totally lothargic (That at least is being treated, which is why I haven't gained any more weight in the last 8 years)

4) Every week since I've graduated high school, I've worked a minimum of 40 hours a week (sometimes as many as 84), only to come home and unwind by playing video games or chatting on the computer. Not exactly a healthy habit, but what else are you going to do at 2 a.m. (especially in the winter)

I'm sure that all of them are well aware of the problem, they just don't like you pointing it out to them. It's annoying.

In my 20's I was really overweight and went on a diet with exercise. I lost 65 pounds. I looked wonderful. It took me 18 months of near starvation, constant exercise, illness, near kidney failure and torture. Then we had the "maintenance". Just to maintain my new body, took near starvation, constant exercise, illness, near kidney failure and torture. I am now 50 years old, overweight, healthy as a horse, happy, and content in my skin. I can power walk a few miles a week, but will NEVER EVER try to kill myself again for society's view of perfection. You don't like to look at me? Then don't look. I have been teaching handicapped kids for 26 years and they only look at me with love and acceptance along with my family and many friends. I will not let people like you let me feel like something must be wrong with me for being happy, respected, liked and an asset to society.

1st, may I suggest using terms like "over weight", or "large"? The term "fat people" is derogatory, and shows a lack of sensitivity.

2nd, while I agree that there are some large people who may not be bothered by their size, I would argue that the majority are bothered by it at some time, or another. For various reasons, it may be more difficult for some to lose weight, than it is for others. Just because it may not be apparent to you that a person is bothered by something, that doesn't mean that it is not so.

To answer your question; Yes, I do think that it would be best if they attempt to lose weight. Obviously, excessive weight is unhealthy, and if they can improve their health by losing it, then (to me) it is worth the effort.

I think a lot of them do try and can't quite manage to do it.

For the sake of their health I would think trying to control one's weight would be a good thing. I'm not really fat, but I weigh more than I would like to. A lot of that is a product of aging.

There are other things people can do to be healthier. Quit smoking, manage blood pressure, avoid risky behavior. We should all try to be healthier for our own good.

God, forgive me...
