My friend just found out she has cancer and she has to go for a MRI on Saturday !

Question: My friend just found out she has cancer and she has to go for a MRI on Saturday and I would like to know why?
The Dr said the good news is, they caught it early but she is not 100% sure what a MRI has to do with cancer. Unless they are looking for brain cancer but I doubt she has that, she is a whip for sure...lol Thank you!!

They are going to stage the cancer and make sure it hasn't metastasized (moved) to other parts of the body. I go through alot of cancer cases daily and I see alot of CT scans, MRIs, and PET scans. When everything looks normal, the end of the report usually says something like "Impression: No evidence of distant metastasis or lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes)"

Just because you doubt she has brain cancer due to the fact that "she's a whip for sure" doesn't mean she doesn't have brain cancer. Please be rational and don't rule out that possibility based on assumption.

MRI is very good imaging test to get high quality images of tissues and helps in diagnosis.
But you need to tell which part of the body is being scanned? Then only you will get proper opinion.

an MRI is helpful for staging the cancer, meaning determining the extent of the spread of the disease.

Sorry, but there is not enough information here to answer you.\
What kind of cancer does your friend have?
What are they doing an MRI of?

I am a cancer registrar.

a mri takes really good pics of the inside of the body they might be trying to see if its spreading or where it is

It gives the doctor a better look at it.
