If it's on the inside of his mouth then it's most likely a canaker sore which are not related to herpes. Cold sores typically affect the out side of the mouth, on or around the lips causing painful sores or blisters.
Herpes can be triggered to break out when you have a lot of stress in your life, but it usually causes some itching, burning and or tingling symptoms. If it's not causing him too much pain then it's probably just a canker sore.
Sounds like a canker. Cankers and herpes are different things. My G-friend insisted that I start taking this new pill out for the canker sores I was getting. Well despite their stupid name, the sh** worked, all the way around. I'm their new biggest fan. Anyway, it's called The Canker Spanker, no joke - don't get me started on their name.
It is more than likely a canker sore. These occur inside the mouth. Most oral herpes (cold sores) occur around the skin on the outside of the mouth, near the lip margins. Canker sores are most commonly caused by foods.
