What happens if someone continues to hyperventilate?!

Question:

What happens if someone continues to hyperventilate?

Last week I was with a group and a young girl had a mild asthma attack; her mother went to get her albuterol, and the asthma attack turned into hyperventilation, which had not happened before with this girl. The mother did not recognize what was happening [the girl's arms got numb and her hands curled inward and she was incoherent, all of which seemed like consequences of lack of oxygen] so took her to the ER. The ER nurse had the mom hold a bag over the girl's nose and mouth and she shortly returned to normal. But what would have happened if the girl had continued to hyperventilate? I wondered about this and looked it up online but could not find the answer.
