Forgot to ask my oncologist?!

Question: Forgot to ask my oncologist?
I have a friend coming into town, and it's my birthday. I would like to go out with her and have a couple of drinks. Is it alright for me to drink while on chemo? I'll be in my nader period (the time when my white cell count can get low), I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma and am on the AB VD regime of chemo. I don't regularly, but it would be nice to have a couple birthday drinks. I don't want to get drunk. Is there anyone out there that can help me please?

Answers:

Hi.Well, your low white blood count means that your immune system is low right now due to the chemo treatment.Has your doctor mentioned your not drinking at any other time during any of your previous treatments? This may give you some insight as to whether you can drink a couple of drinks or not. But,to be on the safe side, and for your own health...I personally think you should ask your doctor(oncologist).....just to be safe. But,if I were in your position? I would have a couple of 'mild' alcoholic drinks at my birthday dinner/bar,but only a couple and mild at that.Go have fun and enjoy yourself with your friend.But,again...I stress to you to speak with your oncologist just to be safe.Ok? Have a happy birthday, and enjoy the time with your friend.Take care.

You should call your oncologist and ask. It's not recommended at all. You'll also need to be very careful going out if you're at your nadir- you'll be more susceptible to colds, flu, etc.

the chemo will make you nauseous enough, why add to it?
