Will you always recover from a hypoglycemic episode?!

Question:

Will you always recover from a hypoglycemic episode?

I have been Type ! diabetic for over 30 years. But my husband died and my son is moving out and will be alone. I try to keep in good control but once in a while my blood sugar drops in the early hours while I am asleep and now I will not have anyone in the house to assist me. If there is no one to give me something to bring my blood sugar up and I am unable and/or unaware, will I come out of it? The last episode I had was one of the worst .

Answers:

There are some people who have died due to their their blood sugar dropping too low. Others have had serious drops and their liver has dumped glucagon into their system to help their body recover. However, do you really want to take the chance to see how your body will react? Even if your body does recover, the low sugar will kill your brain cells and that isn't a good way to live either.

I live alone and I know how scary it is. I was having problems with a lot of lows and I wasn't aware. I had the paramedics called and more trips to the ER than I care to remember. I recommend that you talk to your doctor about your concerns. Perhaps he/she can help you adjust your insulin so that you don't risk going to low at night. I had that problem too, but I went on the pump, and by programing a lower basal rate while I sleep, it keeps my blood sugars stable. I wish you the best!
