Okay this just happenend to me for the first time last night. Trust me I was totally freaked out. But my story is that I woke up and I simply could not move any part of my body at all besides my eyes. My eyes started blacking out a little but I could see this dark shadow standing near my bed but I could not make out of what it was. My body was full of terror and i felt as though the shawdow was casting off an evil feel to it. I also felt that something was laying behind me. Then above my head I could hear my blankets moving like crazy but I could not see what was going on. I just remembered I started praying to God over and over again and then I could start to move again. I then quickly called my boyfriend crying my eyes out because I didn't know what the heck just happened to me until I looked it up online. I honestly thought i was being possessed by a demon or something but once I looked it up it calmed me down a little but then i could not sleep at all last night. Then when i finally did it happened again! but this time i knew what was going on so i just kept my eyes shut so i didnt start to hallucinate anything scary but I didnt halluncinate my arms up in the air and i started breathing like i just ran 10 miles.
Sleep paralysis simply happens when you body is in its REM (rapid eye movement) state. At REM state that is most likely where all your dreams start to happen. In REM state your brain shuts down muscles causing you to be "paralyzed" so you don't act out your dreams when your sleeping. If you wake up quickly from this state your body is still "paralyzed" because your mind wakes up faster than your body. It takes a couple seconds or minutes depending on how fast your brain realizes you are not sleeping anymore and then the brain sends chemicals throughout your body to "wake it up"
The reason why you hallucinate is because your brain still thinks its in sleep mode still and that's how objects of things, people or sounds come into reality.
When i was researching about sleep paralysis a lot of people said that when it happens its best to keep your eyes shut so you don't start hallucinating and just keep thinking of a body part to move and keep trying to move it and that snaps you out of being paralyzed way quicker.
To avoid sleep paralysis simply keep a good and consistant sleeping pattern. Get at least 8 hours of sleep to keep your body rested and relaxed. Try to keep your mind at ease when you are trying to fall asleep so your don't stress out. a lot of people said it happens to them if they stress about something or if they simply have a migrain. i also read that sleeping on your back can cause sleep paralysis but I'm not sure if that's true.
Anyways i know this is long but i hope it helps you out. Just remember don't panic when it happens or if you start to see things. The things you see are just halluncinations and they can't hurt you at all. it's just like having a nightmare but more realistic.

It is called night terrors. See your doctor and there is medication to fix it.
