What is keloid? whether it is curable?!

Question:

What is keloid? whether it is curable?

My father (aged 64) is having extra growth called keloid in the chest area, the size of which is increasing day by day. He feels pain when it is pressed. Some doctors suggested that it can be operated upon and removed while some others say that the size of teh keloid might increase rapidly after the operation and they have advised him to bear with the pain. Please let me know whether there is any cure for the above ailment? My father told me that ten / fifteen years back it was just a mole. Now, I (aged 42) also have a similar mole in the same area and its size is also growing. My daughter, who is aged 12 is also having a similar mole just above her lips and its size is also increasing. Please advise me whether it can be cured?

Answers:

A keloid is a special type of scar which results in an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. It must be noted that there is no treatment for keloids that is considered to be 100% effective.
Please see the web pages for more details on Keloids.
