Answers:

For most people, preventing most pimples can be done by keeping the face clean and the hands off it. You don't need fancy soaps or acne preps. Any soap will do, though plain soap is better than the creamy types and you don't really need deoderant on your cheeks. You should thoroughly wash your face at least twice a day, and definitely before bed. After washing the face and rinsing the soap off, wipe down the skin with plain witch hazel on a cotton pad. That will remove the ingrained dirt the soap didn't get off and leave you with nice clean skin. Witch hazel is the major ingredient in acne washes anyway. It is a natural antiseptic, and easy on the skin, and the plain stuff sold over by the alcohol works just fine. Cheaper too. For the pimples that happen anyway, a drop of tea tree oil directly to the spot before bedtime helps encourage them to go away. Those that are determined to make a white head can be dealt with best with moist heat appications, hot as you can stand, often as you can, until it drains itself. Once it drains, you can apply a drop of tea tree oil to encourage healing. A steam facial once or twice a week will open the pores and do a nice deep clean- a pot of boiling water and a towel over the head will do this nicely. For really persistant bad breakouts, you can use a clay mud mask once a week- no more or it will dry out the skin too much. Once in a great while theres a spot that can't really decide what it wants to do- and that's when a tube of acne spot gel with salicylic acid can be helpful to dry it up. It's best for a specific spot treatment, not all over the face. For noses full of blackheads, the pore strips work great. And although there aren't any foods that cause breakouts, eating a healthy diet is beneficial because it helps heal and maintain healthy skin. If you wear makeup, you should choose the kinds that specifically say they are non-comedomic- not prone to causing blocked pores. The less makeup you wear the better for your skin, though. And remove all makeup before bedtime. Makeup can be touched up lightly during the day, but it should not be a major face job, laying on another layer on top, that's a recipe for trouble. If you live in a city with smog, you will want to wash your face more frequently- the stuff in smog makes your face grimy and blocks pores as well. The biggest rule, though, is no picking, poking, squeezing or prodding allowed. Keep your face clean and keep your hands off it unless you are washing, and do that with clean hands. It's always tempting to mess with a spot, but your skin doesn't need or appreciate the help, and it will just make things worse, and take longer to heal. Your skin has built in directions on how to handle things, and will do it much better without your meddling. Males should use a clean razor to shave, and if breakouts are a problem, they really should use a new blade each time to prevent spreading the bacteria to new spots. When they finish shaving and rinse off the foam, they should follow up with the witch hazel wipedown to soothe the skin and close the pores again. Theres not a great secret to keeping pimples under control and it doesn't have to cost a fortune in special washes and such. If you keep the face clean and the hands off, you don't tend to break out as much. If you still breakout badly in spite of the cleaning regimen, then you are probably in the group best helped by medications from the dermatologist. I did this when I was a teen, and so far have gotten three teens through the pimple period sucessfully with this routine, so I know it works. We have tried to use the toothpaste, but had no luck, definitely not better than our old methods. Tea tree oil can be a bit on the expensive side, but a small bottle lasts a long time, as it only takes a drop on a q-tip to apply. You can spend more money, that's for sure, but it won't buy you better remedies.
