Question:
Husband takes a lot of pills. They constipate him. If he chews some, will it help his constipation?
Husband takes a lot of pills for physical and emotional conditions. Some of his pills can be chewed, others not. If he chews the ones that can be, will that alleviate his constipation somewhat? Does chewing bypass the binding effects of pills on the bowel? Will peristasis eventually return if pills chewed?
As baby boomers age and have problems with this, do you think they'll develop more liquid medications?
Answers:
Sometimes constipation is a side effect to medication. You should research all of his medications on line, because that is a good possibility if he is taking several medications. Also, I recommend fiber. It may sound primitive but it is sure to work. If he does not get a lot of fiber, I would not go and give him a lot at first, gradually increase it. They sell fiber capsules at drugstores and grocery stores. It will not hurt to try it. Chewing or swallowing pills have nothing to do with constipation. The only difference is with comfort of taking the medication, like an elderly man without teeth would swallow a pill or take a liquid medication etc.
