Question:

I have been detected of having a blood sugar level of 198mg/dl. Can I be called diabetic?

I have been advised by my employer to carry on GTT test to confirm that I am diabetic.I am not sure but I have a feeling that once I am declared diabetic,I may lose seome medical benefits.Therefore this question is very important to me.Please help with your answers and advises.

Sugars in the 200 range can happen to non diabetics if they just ate a heavy meal or a big dessert. Infections will also push up blood glucose. So, a single spike doesn't necessarily mean you are diabetic.

But, if you are, you need to know. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause more health problems than you want to think about. Including loss of limbs, kidney failure and blindness. It makes every infection more serious.

If caught early, Type II diabetes can usually be controlled without drugs. Just keep your weight down, eat sensibly and get plenty of exercise. But you need to keep monitoring to make sure you're still on track.

Depending on your insurance carrier, you could lose some benefits. But if you prove to be diabetic and don't get serious about management--you're going to need a LOT of benefits down the road.
