Is Mitral Valve Prolapse really nothing to be concerned about?!
Question:
Is Mitral Valve Prolapse really nothing to be concerned about?
My Dr. tell's me that it's a rather common problem, and that I'll be fine, but then tell's me I need to go see a cardiologist. I dont understand why?
Answers:
Many people with mitral valve prolapse don't need any treatment, but it's all in the degree of prolapse. A cardiologist is able to determine how efficiently your heart is functioning - that's his specialty, after all - and will be the final authority on whether you need treatment.
You will, as you grow older, be somewhat more prone to illnesses related to life style - in other words, disease brought on by poor eating and exercise habits and that 21-st Century demon called "stress". Your cardiologist will suggest seeing a certified nutritionist for hints on how to eat well and perhaps a physical therapist if you're overweight to get you started on an exercise program aimed at keeping your risk of lifestyle-induced disease at acceptable levels.
One thing more: don't go rushing out and join a health club and begin working out UNTIL you've been evaluated by your cardiologist and cleared for such activitiy.
If everything checks out, you probably will be fine - but the cardiologist visit is good insurance...the best money you'll ever spend on yourself!
