What is Rastelli operation for?
Is that a treatment for CHD ( like Tetralogy of Fallot) babies?
i had an operation in my heart at age of 3, but the artificial heart valve seems not work very well as usual.

Answers:

Yes, it is sometimes for Tetralogy of Fallot, ventricular septal defect, abdominal aortic aneurysm, among other things in children and babies. See below, links also at bottom.

The Rastelli procedure is an open-heart surgery to correct certain heart defects in which the normal flow of blood from the heart to the lungs is restricted. In these cases, the blood cannot get fresh oxygen from the lungs to supply the organs and tissues of the body with oxygen. When a cyanotic heart defect is diagnosed, the Rastelli procedure usually needs to be performed as soon as possible. This is to prevent enlarged heart, heart failure or even death in the patient. It is usually completed on children between one and two years of age.

During the Rastelli procedure, the surgeon closes a hole that may be present in the wall (septum) between the left and right lower chambers of the heart (a ventricular septal defect). The surgeon then creates a viable channel (valved conduit) through which blood can flow more freely from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery, which carries the blood to the lungs. This establishes a more healthy blood flow from the heart to the lungs and improves the level of oxygen in the patient’s blood. As a result, the patient’s body no longer has a bluish tint to the skin.

A successful operation will restore a more normal blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs, resulting in enough oxygen in the bloodstream to meet the body’s demand. As a result, the patient’s skin should return to a healthier color, and improvements will be seen in energy levels and new ability to thrive.

If all goes well, then lifelong medical management will still be necessary. Some patients may also require pacemaker implantation if irregular heartbeats are likely. In addition, the valves used in the Rastelli procedure will not grow with the child and will need to be replaced later in life as the child grows.

If you don't feel your valve is working as well as it should, see your cardiologist immediately. I never had the rastelli surgery, but I have had open heart surgery and have a mechanical heart valve (had my mitral valve replaced).
