Question re: MRSA?

My friend just told me she has MRSA (antibiotic-resistant staph infection - I belive it's the CA - MRSA type). She has spent a lot of time with me & kids (one is 3 mos. old) - should I be worried? Just how contagious is this? Should I ban her from my house or is there precautionary measures I can take so that my family is not at risk? Please help?

Answers:

Where does your friend have MRSA? MRSA is usually found in bodily fluids and/or moist tissue. Prevention techniques generally depend on where the MRSA is. Is it in a wound? Is it respiratory? Wounds can be covered with an occlusive bandage. If it's respiratory and she is coughing frequently she should probably wear a mask. Your family should practice good hand washing and wipe things down thoroughly after a visit. That's my professional input. Now, as a mom I would have issues with the 3 month old being around her. Their immune system is still developing and I just have concerns with that situation. Maybe you could visit her without the baby for a while. Best of luck to you and your friend!
