I have COPD. Lately, I have been feeling weak. That leads to shortness of breath!

Question:

I have COPD. Lately, I have been feeling weak. That leads to shortness of breath. What should I do?

I do not know why I feel weak. Should I get a blood test. One thing causes the other. I do use a nebulizer 4 times a day and when I can't breath. Also I take Mucus Relief which helps to breath

Answers:

I believe a trip to your pulmonologist is in order. Fatigue is often caused by a lack of oxygen. Perhaps your COPD is progressing at a rate that may require you to use supplemental oxygen. If your organs and tissues are not getting enough oxygen, your whole body is going to feel tired. The nebulizer will help, but at some point your lungs are going to need something else. Supplemental oxygen along with pulmonary rehab will both help with your fatigue. Remember, the longer you can stay ambulatory, the longer you can fight your COPD. See your doctor as soon as possible and make sure you detail all of your new symptoms for him/her. The more you remain inactive due to your fatigue, the worse you are going to feel. The worse you feel, the more inactive you become. It can be a vicious cycle with a poor outcome if you are not careful. See your doctor and do it soon. Good luck.
