Otitis Externa is inflammation of the ear canal caused by a bacterial infection!. Although commonly referred to as "swimmer's ear", lots of people get it without ever going near a pool!. So, how does the bacteria get into your ear!?
(1) Too much cerumen (ear wax) in the ear canal will trap bacteria
(2) Trauma to the ear canal can make it susceptible to infection - yet another argument for NEVER cleaning your ears with cotton swabs!
(3) Yes, diabetes and other diseases that compromise the immune system can put you at risk for infection, but at the age of 16 this is probably an unlikely scenario
(4) Rarely, inflammation from allergies can cause it
Regarding the mild increase in pain you are experiencing, it may simply be due to the ear drops you are using to treat it!. The infection itself has caused your ear canal to be inflammed and very sensitive!. This can make the medication sting a bit!. You should get reexamined, though, if your symptoms persist or you continue to have increased pain!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

"Swimmer's Ear" is a general term, really, for buildup of fluid in the ear!. But the fluid isn't really in your ear; it's in your Eustachian Tube!. This is an opening that connects the ear and the throat, and it easily becomes infected if it is partly or fully closed!. I am wondering if you had ear infections when you were younger!. The best way to take care of this is by going to a chiropractor!. All types of ear infections are common in people who have a misalignment of the top vertebra in the neck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
