Does diagnostic test assure unilateral deafness for my son?!

Question: Does diagnostic test assure unilateral deafness for my son!?
My son got his diagnostic test on his 6th week after couple of hearing screen test!. His left ear failed both in autoaccoustic and ABR test!. Does this mean he is deaf in one ear or there can be anyother reason for failing!. I have not met the ENT yet!. The audiologist said no fluids, profound loss!. She did not do temponometry test!. Please help !. Thank you !.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know about these particular tests, but I do have unilateral deafness and I know about screening tests!. I thought I'd answer since no-one else has! It sounds like a problem was picked up with your son first of all when he had a screening test!. "Screening" tests (for all kinds of health problems) are designed to be a bit over-sensitive, meaning they pick up quite a lot of kids who turn out to have nothing wrong!. These children get sorted out from children with a genuine problem by follow-up tests!. The follow-up tests are a lot more accurate!. If the word "diagnostic" is used, e!.g!. "diagnostic test" this mean that it gives a definitive answer!. So if it was a 'diagnostic' hearing test and the audiologist said there was 'profound loss' then unfortunately it does sound like there is a problem with that ear!.

On a brighter note, unilateral deafness is almost trivial and will probably have very little effect on your son!. It would certainly not affect speech or anything like that!. I've had it since I was 3 (due to whooping cough/pertussis)!. My only problems with it are that I find it harder than other people to follow what someone is saying if there is a lot of background noise, like at a party, and I can't tell the direction of where a sound is coming from!. That's it!. My only issues are missing gossip at parties and trying to figure out where someone is when I hear them call my name from a distance! Hope your son is OK, good luck with it all!Www@Answer-Health@Com
