Do they freeze your body during Heart Aneurism surgery?!
Question: Do they freeze your body during Heart Aneurism surgery!?
Answers:
Hypothermia (lowering of body temperature) decreases the metabolic requirement of vital organs!. Hence it is possible to clamp the aorta for a longer period with hypothermia!. If a longer procedure time is anticipated, hypothermia is a useful adjunct to aneurysm surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
I had an aortic dissection that required emergency surgery in April 2007!. It was a pretty involved procedure -- 13 hours!. In addition to the dissection, I also needed some work done on the arteries that led to my head so they had to stop the blood flow to my brain temporarily!. I remember the surgeon explaining that a human brain can go x minutes without blood and shouldn't experience any ill side effects, but he performed his work in shorter increments in an effort to minimize the risks further!. I owe that guy so much -- I feel like I have full mental capacity (I remember everything I did before the surgery)!. Additionally, the surgeon told me they do cool your blood to a low temperature during surgery -- I can't remember the reason for it, but I know they definitely cool it, at least for this type of surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Are you talking about Aortic aneurysm surgery!? I don't believe they freeze your body!. I know they have to clamp of the Aorta and fix the anerysm as quickly as possible!. They have approx!. 4 minutes to clamp it off and fix and unclamp!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
I had a coronary triple bypass in 1999!. It was my understanding then that my body temperature was lowered about 10 degrees F!. Certainly, the cooling does not come anywhere near freezing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
They use a shunt!. It bypasses the aneurism until the repair is made!.
