What your friend is probably referring to is the aspartame or nutra sweet that is found in a lot of gum products!.
I was a bio major in college and we learned about these studies!. The rats that get cancer from ingesting these same products are fed several teaspoons of it everyday for months on end!. That would mean you would probably have to ingest about 50 lbs worth of aspartame or nutrasweet everyday for a year or two, and then it "might" cause cancer for you!.
